Nadine was content flitting around the Lost Hotel for as long as she could remember, passing the time by making the occasional lightbulb blink in time to her humming, or timing how fast she could bounce between electric sockets. It was all about moving around, settling down in a trash can when she was tired, then bouncing up and about again. None of the other Pokemon minded, nor really cared. If someone wanted to kill time, as long as they weren't bothering anyone else--no one stopped them. Nadine herself didn't bother much with any other Pokemon who lived in the Hotel with her.
Everyone had a place to stay, and so everyone generally kept to themselves.
Not very often, a human or two would pass by, and scavenge things from trash cans she'd sometimes be in. When this happened Nadine would sometimes enjoy herself with an 'audience' by flitting as fast as she could between anything she could enter and crackle with a bit of life, then stay back to watch what the humans would do. Most of them ran away spooked. Some of them stayed, dubious, and the Rotom would enjoy a round two--that involved zapping everything around them in an erratic light show that she'd never yet seen anyone stay for.
The only thing that changed was the one time humans came to the Lost Hotel one early morning, while everyone (as far as Nadine knew) was asleep. She was woken up with a half-eaten, spongy thing to the face, tossed into her trash can. She very nearly zapped out, surprised as she was. Some of the sweet thing got into her mouth instead, and made her pause. There was nothing like it in the Hotel.
Munching on the strange food, she for once listened to the humans who threw it away, talking about 'desserts', of 'cupcakes', and of how 'students at that small shop in Dendemille made them so much better than the ones from convenience stores.'
With the spongy food gone, Nadine peeked out from the trash can, and hitched a ride on one human's Holo Caster when it was clear they were leaving. It was clearly impulse, but who knew if they were going back--and who knew if they'd have more of that yummy thing? Knowing that humans tended to run the heck away when she appeared, Nadine simply stayed quiet and kept a sharp ear on the human babbling, gleaning from their conversation that she'd just eaten a 'cake'.
She stayed with the unwitting humans (with the occasional complaints of static in one's Holo Caster) until they'd reached Dendemille. Both of them were so absorbed in conversation that neither noticed a pair of sharp eyes taking in her very new surroundings from a hole she'd made by pushing the zipper of the bag she hitched in open. She left them when they'd entered a place that suddenly smelled just like the cake she'd just eaten--and hid in the first thing she saw: a shiny oven.
The place was abuzz with its own kind of life, which Nadine watched--and kept watching for quite a while. She kept hidden while everyone around her talked about baking, about classes, about a new dessert they wanted to try, while she stole a few nibbles here and there to both feed herself and sample all these wonderful things she gradually realized that the young humans around the place were learning to make themselves.
When the shop was closed up at night, Nadine would explore Dendemille, keeping to the shadows and getting to know the place so she could come back when she wanted. It was on one of these excursions that she eavesdropped on a few humans walking late at night, and spoke of 'changing back for a while because walking on two legs felt too familiar.'
She followed them to the outskirts of the city--and watched one turn into a Pokemon. Nadine quickly revealed herself, and had the longest conversation she'd have yet with the two. They explained that they were from a faction called the Ursa Ring, and were kind enough to tell her about the Dittech and how it was capable of giving pokemon human appearances--with humans being non the wiser. The Rotom was beyond fascinated, and nearly tumbled over her own words telling them she'd give anything to be able to look human. They were amused to find out it was because she wanted to take classes, but agreed to help Nadine out. They agreed to meet her at the Lost Hotel the next night with a Dittech of her own, and to teach her how to use it.
They met as promised, with a small Dittech model they thought appropriate for her size. Once she'd understood how to activate it, how to select her outfit, and how she couldn't afford to 'be human' for too long or else change her lifespan in ways she couldn't control, to say Nadine was beside herself with excitement was a gross understatement.
They couldn't stop her from waving her new limbs for a while. Or from wiggling her hands after they got her to stop waving.
She thanked them over and over--and was then offered something they called 'documents', as well as a place to stay in Dendemille (since that was where she wanted to take her classes). Being offered this much made Nadine ask--out of curiosity--why they were being so nice.
The two older faction members explained that they can help her more if she were to join the Ursa Ring in return. She'd meet more Pokehumans, as well as help other Pokemon find places among humans, just like they helped her.
Nadine hesitated, but did her best to tell them that she'd manage on her own. She did appreciate their time and effort, and so promised that she'd think about making that commitment when she'd been able to learn what she wanted, and maybe bring something to the table for their faction other than dead weight.
She felt so guilty for disappointing them that she quickly offered to make them cupcakes when she learned how to thank them instead. It made them laugh, at least, even though she'd been sincere. When they'd ask her where she'd live, she grinned and mentioned a cozy little space she'd been staying in for quite some time now.
Nadine came to the shop for the first time as a Pokehuman student the morning after, eager to learn things she'd been hearing about for days--in nothing but a long sweater that came to her knees, and shoes. She'd been told it was important to keep covered, and heck, she liked the sweater. Thought it was fine to choose just that from the Dittech's meager selection. It wasn't until someone jokingly whispered that 'someone forgot to wear bottoms' that Nadine realized all the giggles in class were directed at her. She left, saying she forgot something, and didn't come to class the next day.
The day after that, she showed up again, more decently clothed--if only because she'd gone around the day before watching what people wore ("Top and bottom, check!") so that the giggly humans would stop laughing at her and let her learn how to bake a few things in peace. No one laughed, but the teacher in charge had to ask if she'd paid for the class already.
At that point Nadine simply said she wanted to take the class, and, using an idea she'd turned over and over in her head for this very day, said that she'd like to work at the shop where they were taught to pay it off.
The teacher said they had no need for a new worker. Nadine insisted. Very insistently. The teacher was nice, maybe a bit snappish, but the Rotom wouldn't stop.
With enough prodding and begging and promises to work very, very hard, Nadine was reluctantly allowed in the classes. When they were over, she'd work like she promised in the shop, surprising most people with her familiarity with the place. They were all very nice, but they were all very busy. It was just like being in the Hotel, flitting around on two legs instead of none, being with people you occasionally smiled at--but with the smells and tastes of treats that made Nadine that much happier just thinking about it.
Now her days consist of classes and working at the bakery shop as a waitress by day, and spending the night as a Rotom in one of the shop's ovens. Sometimes she'd travel back to the Lost Hotel just to become better acquainted with the bigger world she now found herself in, especially on days where there were no classes to take.
The young girl blew hair out of her face while sweeping the shop's gleaming floor, and stretched a few times. Everyone already left, and no one had any problems leaving the key with her to lock up. Of course this meant she was supposed to be the first person to arrive the next morning, but this wasn't a problem. In fact, this would have been perfect--if only Dittechs could pass through doors.
Nadine took her time making sure everything was where it was expected to be, that the floor and tables were clean, that there were no crumbs around, and stepped outside the bakery. A look to the left, a look to the right, and moment all her looking told her there was no one around--she went to the back, where she knew the bathroom's small ventilation window was located. She placed a crate under the window, stood on it, and carefully placed the Dittech on the ledge.
Her head snapped to the side, but nope, no one there. Coast was still clear. Didn't look like she needed to use any of her emergency bathroom excuses tonight.
In a few seconds, the now much tinier Rotom zipped through the window, and carried the Dittech to one of the ovens Nadine cozied up in every night. It was tucked safely into the cupboard directly next to it, before Nadine tucked herself inside one oven, smiling at the warm, lingering scent of pastries it baked the whole day.
